May is National Moving Month, and with peak homebuying season upon us, it’s a smart time to think about who you’ll hire for your next big move.
Movers are a big part of the homebuying and selling experience. The right movers can make the process easier, faster and less stressful — but the wrong ones can delay your move, cost you money or damage your belongings.
If you’re planning to buy or sell a house this year, follow these tips for hiring the right movers.
- Understand your needs. Before starting your search, have a clear idea of your budget and what services you’ll need the movers to provide. Will they simply need to move your belongings from one point to another, or will you need packing and moving services? Do you have any large or specialty items that need moving (like a piano, for instance)?
- Check ratings and reviews. Read online reviews, and check the Better Business Bureau ratings for any moving company you consider hiring. You can also ask around for recommendations from friends, family, neighbors and colleagues.
- Ask about insurance. Make sure your movers are covered in case they damage or lose any of your belongings, and get details as to the terms of that coverage. It can offer peace of mind, especially if you’re moving any important or expensive items.
- Compare multiple companies. Look at several different movers and compare each on pricing, services, experience and reviews. Considering alternative options like storage pods or renting a moving van yourself? Include those in your analysis, too.
