It’s hurricane season, and your home could be vulnerable if you live in or near a coastal region.

Fortunately, there are many steps you can take to protect your property and reduce the risk of wind damage should a severe storm occur.

Are you worried your home might be damaged due to strong winds? Use these strategies to protect your property.

  • Get a wind mitigation inspection. A wind mitigation inspection is a type of property survey that evaluates how susceptible your home is to wind damage. The inspector will look at your walls, windows, roof and more, to help you pinpoint areas of your house that could use improvement.
  • Reinforce your home where possible. Reinforcing your doors, windows and garage doors or adding roof-to-wall anchors can help strengthen your home and prevent damage if a storm hits.
  • Upgrade your windows and doors. Swapping out your builder-grade windows for impact-resistant or shatterproof models can keep them from breaking in strong winds. You can add extra protection by installing hurricane shutters. You can also upgrade your doors to hurricane-rated ones, which can be particularly helpful on doors with large openings (like the garage).
  • Add water barriers. You can seal your roof deck and add underlayment material to the roof to provide an extra barrier of protection.

Improving your home’s resistance to wind can often change the assessed value of the property and qualify you for lower insurance premiums or some insurance discounts, so make sure to talk to your insurer if you make any of the above updates.
